Can you remove all of the group by stuff and create a derived table on your query, and then reference 'Rank'?

EXCEPT and INTERSECT will have bad plans for the most part, so this doesn't surprise me. Handy, but not performance-friendly.

I'd look at the split method in .Net to create an array for this. Otherwise you might get stuck with some cheesy TSQL string manipulation.

Try using ShortDateTime with DateTime.Parse. Check this link and see if anything there might help.
