Automatically Creating UML Database Diagrams for SQL Server

SQL Server database developers seem reluctant to use diagrams when documenting their databases. It is probably because it has, in the past, been difficult to automatically draw precisely what you want, other than a vast Entity-relationship diagram. However, you can do it without buying any third-party tool, just using some existing Java-based open-source tools; and can even automate it entirely, using SQL and PowerShell. Phil Factor shows how.

What about traces? You can set up a trace to log your logins specifying NTuserName and LoginName and also a DatabaseName or DatabaseID field in the Data Columns for the events Audit Login and Audit Logut or Audit Login Failed. It could be done by running a script, so it would run without Profiler being open […]

I agree that security is getting tougher (wait, it was always tough!). I'm hoping that the tool vendors will fill in the gaps. Locking down the enviroment is fairly mechanical, it's just there are so many different places. Andy http://qa.sqlservercentral.com/columnists/awarren/
