The Tally Table has proven to be a simple and elegant method for avoiding many varieties of RBAR. Unfortunately, one of its more common uses, that of a CSV splitter, has a well-known and serious performance problem. MVP Jeff Moden shows us what that problem is and how to correct it. A language has a linear syntax if it can be invoked using character strings. A non-procedural (or declarative) language is one where the programmer need not determine exactly how to get the desired result; one declares the desired result, but not the procedures necessary to derive it. --Jonathan
