I have a problem with reporting services... Friday I was able to run reports both through Microsoft CRM, or through the ReportServer browser, and Print them or Export them. Monday morning I could no longer print or export the reports. I can view them and run them just fine, but I cannot export or print them. If I print it says an unexpected error occurred, and it makes no difference what printer it goes to or where I print from. If I try to export it, I get an error that says:

Here is what occured on friday... we have been having issues with our SRS. Our reporting services are being hosted on a seperate machine from our SQL Server. It had to do with how Microsoft CRM handled reports. At any rate, we had upgraded to SQL Server 2005 a few months ago. When we did this, we got no errors. Everything went great. The weird part is our databases stayed at 8.0 compatibility level. If you go into the properties for the databases, there is not even a 9.0 option, but all of the tools and services for SQL Server 2005 were installed. We had been having a phantom problem also that came and went at its will, where our users would run a report and they would get an RS error stating that there was an invalid username: (null) being passed in rather than their actual credentials. In thumbing through some articles I found, one suggested that you use SRS Configuration manager to upgrade the reporting services database in order to overcome the NULL username error. I did that on friday, and now on Monday I cannot print or export reports. The weird thing is, in order to test the theory I upgraded the ReportServer database on our SQL Server, but all of our reports are hosted on a different server (Active Directory server where our CRM installation is). I am so confused by all of this... My specialty is queries, so I think this is a little over my head. My main concern is to just get the reports where I can export them again so that the company can meet its deadlines this week. ANY help is appreciated. That is an intense error that I can't see I've seen before ... a couple pieces of the error look to be like you may have a consistency or data issue with in the reportserver database. Have you run a DBCC CHECKDB against ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB?

Today has just been hell... I have not ran that. I actually stumbled onto what looks like it may be at least part of the issue, but I have restarted my AD server and now am having IIS problems!! Good grief... anyway, there is a file in my reportingservices directory titled catalog.sql and it looks like it is the sql that fires with every report. In that report it was calling on two columns from different tables in my reportserver database that do not exist. Maybe when I tried to do that upgrade from within reportingservices configuration manager, it re-created that database from scratch and got rid of anycolumns that were added?? I dont know... all I know is I added the userparams column to one of the tables, and the error I get on the end user machine doesnt list userparams as an unknown column. It only lists ParamsHash. I am going to add that to the SessionData column as soon as I get my IIS issues resolved, and then I can run CHECKDB on that database. Thanks! Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

I had to do a double-take on that one as well. If you manually changed anything in that DB and applied a Service pack, upgrade, or heck, pretty much any patch dealing with SSRS - I wouldn't be surprised that any alterations you made to its contents are toast.
That's about like messing with any of the system objects - just say NO in my book.

Ok.. well now youve scared the frik out of me. I did not know what else to do! The database was modified when we tried to do the reportingservices upgrade do the reportserver database. Apparently when it tried to upgrade (and failed) for some reason it removed these columns from the database's various tables. The only reason I know this is because that file with the SQL has not been modified in over a year according to the date on the file, which means that SQL was the same before friday when I tried to upgrade the database, which means it fired just fine with no errors on Thursday, which means those columns had to be there. I put them back. What problems can I expect now that I have manually manipulated tables in that database, and is there a way to go back and cure my problem anyone know of???
I mean... it did solve the problem (at least it appears that way from the outside). I can run reports and export just fine now. HOWEVER, it still does not print but it is a new error. It just says:

All right, just relax. So you upgraded from SQL 2000 to 2005, an in place upgrade, but the RS database stayed in 8.0 or 2000 mode and this worked fine except for an occasional error in getting username. Have I accurately explained the state prior to Friday?
Then you upgraded the RS databases and everything went crazy. So far so good?
Your Report Server web service is installed on your CRM server which also has SQL Server, correct?
If all I have mentioned above is correct, then it seems you now have a SQL 2000 RS web service trying to interact with an RS 2005 DB now. This will not work. You either need to upgrade the Reporting Services install on the CRM server or restore the old SQL 2000 RS database on the SQL Server.

Wow! That was a pretty accurate re-cap up to the last part. My setup is the following:
Active Directory server hosting CRM as well as the reports. CRM automatically installed RS 2000 on that server. To access the reports from the server you would browse ADserver/reports.
SQL Server 2005 on our DBSserver as well as all of the Databases.
Exchange Server.
Terminal Server.
All of the things that are happening you pretty much covered.

Well, I was wrong a little bit. It seems that the reports are printing. They are getting sent to the printer, and printing just fine. However, it is just throwing that error on the screen. It does not appear to be affecting the print job. Any thoughts?

I just came across something on the MSDN web site that implies that that particular error would be resolved in SP1 for SSRS 2005. Have you patched your 2005 install?

Still havin the same problem too. Have an open support case with Microsoft. This problem seems pretty ominous so I figured it would be appropriate to burn one of our support calls.
