Favorite Book Quote

  • Okay, I've got to share this one. Who here is a fan of Monk?

Just recently read one of the media tie-in books and found a quote I absolutely adore.

"You have to have faith in something." -- Natalie Teeger

"I do. But I don't think Formula 409 is going to solve my problems."

    --Adrian Monk

--Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants by Lee Goldberg

  • Never read Monk. Come to think of it, I'm not sure there are any great quotations from books that strike me.

  • Heh.... it's ok Steve... we're all friends here... I don't know how to read either 😀

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.
"Change is inevitable... change for the better is not".

  • I can, for some unknown reason, only ever remember 2 exact phrases from the books I've read. One is from Erich Fromm:

The quest for certainty blocks the quest for meaning.

And the other is from a wonderful Lord of the Rings parody written by the Harvard Lampoon, called Bored of the Rings:

He would have killed him then and there but pity stayed his hand.

"It's a pity I've run out of bullets." he thought.

I'm sure there are drugs for whatever it is I have.

And then again, I might be wrong ...
    David Webb

  • David, I hate to break the news, but there are no drugs for what people like you & I have.

But they are working on a vacine to prevent future outbreaks. @=)

  • I know they are more of a 'guy' thing, but Curly from the Three Stooges had one:

    Brooklyn accent:

"I tried to 't(h)ink, but nuttin' happened!'

    Groucho Marx:

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read."

Churchill was good too - (paraphrasing here):

From a dinner guest to him: "Sir, if you were my husband, I would poison your tea.".

Churchill: "Madam, if you were my wife, I would gladly drink it".

  • I love that Groucho Marx quote; another good one is:

Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana 🙂

Matt ChandlerSoftware test engineer,Red Gate Software

  • Funny, I could remember the opening line, but had to look up the title of the book. 🙂

    The Gun Seller

by Hugh Laurie (of House M.D. Fame)

    From memory

"Imagine you had to break some-ones arm."

    "I don't know what I don't know."

  • From The Suspect, by John Lescroat:

The albacore will have their vengeance.

There is no "i" in team, but idiot has two.
  • More Groucho:

"Don't leave in a huff, leave in a hurry. If you can't leave in a hurry, leave in a taxi."

There is no "i" in team, but idiot has two.

Never read Monk. Come to think of it, I'm not sure there are any great quotations from books that strike me.

In one of Janet Evanovich's novels a secretary who is painstakingly removing clumps of mascara from her eyelashes says "It's f***ing hard to be a lady." Kind of says it all, eh?

David mentioned Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings. There's a good line in there about Legolamb (the elf) molesting a chipmonk.

  • I like Monk.

Here is one of my favorite from 'Gone with the Wind'

'After all, tomorrow is another day'

  • Another Groucho Marx ( I think)

" I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member"

    :Whistling:

    Madame Artois

  • I think that was W.C. Fields.

There is no "i" in team, but idiot has two.
  • I'm glad I started this thread. I've been enjoying everyone's quotes. @=)
