2000 to 2005 Side by Side Upgrade question

  • Hi, I'm in the process of practising SQL 2000 to 2005 upgrades on test servers for familiarisation purposes.

It seems that if I firstly install & configure SQL2000 on a server and then install SQL2005 on the same server to run side by side I just get the SQL client and tools and not a 2005 instance.  However I want to have a 2000 & 2005 instance running so that I can migrate the DB's over from 2000 to 2005.  Is the only way to do this by creating a named instance when installing 2005 on the server which already has 2000 on it, as that does then give me the 2 instances.  The problem with that of course is that then I've got a named instance so once I've migrated the DB's from 2000 to 2005 I'll have to change all the clients and another jobs to point at a specific instance name!!

Any info or clarification would be gratefully received.

    Thanks very much

  • if you want sql2000 and 2005 on the same box you will need a named instance

easiest upgrade is to buy new hardware, install, configure and then rename the server

  • You can also use an alias no the client side.
