Address Validation

  • Ok I have a fairly straight forward question, wondering if anyone knows the answer. I have been tasked to use USPS Address tools to validate our clients addresses, we are switching systems and need to cleanse the data on our servers, I am wanting to know if this would violate the terms of use policy, we aren't creating shipping labels, or shipping with another company(FEDEX,UPS) we just want to check that it is a valid address before importing into the new system, if it isn't than make our Contracts or Accounting department fix it.

  • I am wanting to know if this would violate the terms of use policy, ...

Please provide some more context. You're concerned about violating the terms of use policy for what product or edition?

    SQL Server Developer Edition?

You would have to check with the USPS terms of use policy.

I still can't see the straight forward question :hehe:

It is somewhat buried but reading the original question is it quite obvious.

I am wanting to know if this would violate the terms of use policy

  • Yes it is straight forward...Using the web tools is it a violation of use if I just use the tools for validating addresses, for such smart individuals, you like to make things more complicated.

We don't work for FEDEX or UPS. I assumed this was a perhaps a question about leveraging an instance of SQL Server Developer Edition for the purpose of one time data scrubbing, but it's not stated that way.

  • That is what I am wanting to do, but it states for use on websites, I don't want to use for a website.

Agreed. Not sure why it is hard to have just actually read your question. While perhaps worded perfectly it is pretty obvious when reads the words what you are asking.

However, as stated we are not experts at the terms of use for the USPS webservices agreement. You will have to read the terms of use as posted by the USPS in order to find your answer.

  • There are limits on how many addresses you can send how quickly to the USPS webservice validation tool, so no they do not want you using it for doing bulk validation jobs of your entire database(well depending on how big your database is).

Of course they may have changed that since I last used it.

  • Without reading their terms and conditions I would say give it a go, if they have some sort of security in place that only mean you won't be able to validate all of your addresses, on the other hand if they don't, they are ok with people abusing "them"

  • Thank You for your response, very constructive and straight to the point. Our database isn't very large at all, maybe 70,000 plus rows give or take. And this is something that SSIS is capable of doing? Right. Any good articles that you know of that discusses accomplishing this, I have began searching for data scrubbing, and found a couple but not sure I am headed in the right direction.

  • There are many commercial providers of address data. This would be better than attempting to make a web service call for each record in an ETL process.

The USPS one is free 😛

  • Yes...I thought that too. I am looking into using it, just trying to find the best way to start...researching the process. Thanks for the help.
