Anti-Virus program on SQL Server Machine !

    hi all,

    are there any problem if i didn't put Anti-Virus program on SQL Server Machine ? or I must put an anti-virus program ?

    because I know that Anti-virus programs make the server very very slow!

    and if i put one. .. will i put Norton or Macafee ?? does I need a special adjustment to adjust it to be faster ..?

    You leave yuorself vunerable to attacks without an AnitVirus solution.

    But if you do install have it set not to scan the MDF, NDF, and LDF files or the backup extension you use for local backups of SQL files. And have setup to monitor only opened and changed files. This doesn't hurt performance as bad as people make out unless it is scanning te files. Also, if you have your data and log files on seperate drives from the executables which ideally you should then turn off all scanning of that/those drive(s) to keep IO from drive access of AntiVirus out of the picture.

    We do something similar to what Antares recommends. One addition is to also exclude pagefile.sys (Windows page file). This is usually found in the root of the system drive (typically c:\).

    thanks Antares686 and bkelley for your great ideas.

    I set norton Antivirus Corporate Edition NOT to scan the MDF, NDF, LDF , TRN and BAK files,

    and not to scan important Folders .

    and also not to scan All (pagefile.sys) files which is the virtual memory files.

    also in in File System RealTime Protection page in norton Antivirus Corporate Edition

    1- I made to (scan files when) >> [ Modified { scan or created } ] from (Advanced) Button

    2- and I made (Nework) in (Drive Types) >> Unchecked

    are there any other important Ideas missing??

    I wouldn't turn a folder off by default. The reason is that if you do, then a virus that gets put in that folder will be undetected.
