Application freezes during Multiple File Backup

  • We are running SQL Server 2005 SP3 Ent 64 Biot witht he Application Postilion Office 4.2.

When we run the normal single file backups the application does not freeze, but when we run the backup to multiple files to a shared drive , the operators claim the application freezes. Has anyone come across similar incidents ?

  • Backups do not interfare with other operations. Have you tried finding if there is any blocking during that period? You said the backups are on some shared drive (assuming not on the same drive where data/log files reside), so IO contention should not happen.

  • We did not find any other locks during the process .

  • Long running Queries? Find their SPids and see what are they waiting on..

  • Will do that .

    Thanks

  • Interesting issue. Do you have monitoring on the server? Does CPU, Disk, Memory use go up in different ways during the multi-file backup than during the single file backup? It's actually a common practice, a suggested best practice, to use multiple files for large backups to help speed them up. I'd expect a slight increase in CPU & Memory, but a decrease in disk during that operation.
