Could some someone provide me with some UNICODE string data that casts wrong from NVARCHAR to VARCHAR and back? Don't need a lot, just a few short string values.

    Thanks.

    Wouldn't this be the list?

    😎

Mostly, but not entirely, yes. There are a few caveats to keep in mind:

    1) That test only checks the first 65,535 "characters", but there are many more. Unicode can map up to 1.1 million characters (though at the moment only 260,253 have been mapped). You can see the list on the Unicode.org webite under Unicode Utilities: UnicodeSet. Your test code would produce the correct characters if you both increased the @SampleSize to be 183969 (the largest Code Point based on that list on Unicode.org: "U+2CEA1") AND run the code in a database having a default Collation ending in _SC, which were introduced in SQL Server 2012.

    2) That test produces values which are not valid UTF-16 Code Points. There are at least 2048 of them which are only valid when used in combination, which would be called a Surrogate Pair, which produces a Supplementary Character (i.e. Code Points above U+FFFF).

    3) The results of that code (any test code, really) will have slight variations depending on the Code Page implied by the active Collation. Some Code Pages have "best fit" mappings for Unicode characters to fit into an Extended ASCII character, and some don't. And there is variation of those characters between the Code Pages that have such mappings.

  • Regarding the federal guidelines for bathroom use... I didn't want to start a fight on The Thread. I posted the news because I thought it was good news, especially since one of our own now has legal federal recognition and acknowledgement of her situation.

Knowing as many transgender people as I do, especially people who can't get recognition by health officials because (in the words of one person) they're not "pretty enough to qualify for hormone treatment or reassignment surgery" I think it's a good thing that the federal government has acknowledged their existence and the need to allow them a safe place to do their business. Like Stephen Colbert, I don't care who's doing their business in the stall next to me. As a woman, there are only two "man in the bathroom" types I'm threatened by. The one who barges in trying to check parts to ensure that only women are in the bathroom and the man who was going to barge into the bathroom and assault / rape women even before bathroom bills and gender identity became an issue.

And there are already laws that deal with the later.

EDIT: Posted the wrong video link. Corrected now.

No argument from me. I’m questioning whether or not this legislation will actually benefit anybody, also whether or not it might open the door a little wider to abuse from those less restrained than we’d like them to be. HAB isn’t going to disappear any time soon, nor is the bunch of giggling girls barging into the blokes’ toilets. We don’t want people behaving like this but they do. Hugo’s fine essay reminds us how tough it is for these kids before they even take a step into the Front Line of state schooling. Make it easier for them and give them some choices, let them take their dose of education wherever they feel most comfortable. School toilets aren’t a safe place, on the contrary, they’re often the only place in school with sufficient privacy for bullying activity.

This legislation is the lowest-cost action to take of several possibilities which would include home schooling, segregated schooling, and individual toilets (bathrooms in the US) in a similar style to disabled toilets – and I feel it could too easily put them in the line of fire.

    This:

people who can't get recognition by health officials because (in the words of one person) they're not "pretty enough to qualify for hormone treatment or reassignment surgery"

is overdue a challenge. Bigotry in public office really makes me mad.

Brandie, I don't think you started anything that could even remotely be classed as a "fight." Heck, I don't even think this quite rose to the level of "spirited discussion." That being said, it's the watercooler, so it's open topic!

    My thoughts on the topic...

Personally, I'm somewhat ambivalent. I think (on the political side,) that if the US Gov hadn't made such a big deal out of this announcement, it would've (somewhat) quietly gone by. By making a fuss, the Gov gave the people who would most oppose this a reason to make a bigger fuss. Myself personally, I would not be opposed to having the "unisex" restrooms such as what Steve pointed out. I might lean towards, however, in public schools, having three restrooms, boys, girls, unisex.

I do think part of the reason behind all the furor over this issue is, we here in the USA tend to be rather "uptight" when it comes to peoples "private parts." In Europe, it seems, casual nudity is less of an issue, while here in the US it's limited to private "resorts" that often have to deal with attempts by the rest of the community they're in trying to get them driven out / shut down.

OK, if I go on much more, I think I'm going to start getting political (even though this is both a political and an acceptance {not entirely sure that's the word I want} issue) and that could get quite ugly...

My favourite was the candidate who addressed every answer to my team lead, even though I was asking the questions. When my team lead quizzed him on that (on the way out of the building), he said he'd assumed I was from HR. 🙁

I especially like the "from another computer in another internet" part of the OP. It's especially interesting because they claim to be the server admin. How many internets do they have?

Maybe it's Al Gore in disguise and he's created another few dozen internets.

Or it's someone who misused DBCC TIMEWARP() and found himself in an alternate internet that doesn't abide by the same rules that he remembers from his old internet (the world wide web!).

The position he was interviewing for was my assistant/replacement. 😀

I'm with you. I was in a Craft Beer Golf Scramble on Saturday. It rained, it sleeted, it hailed, the sun peeked out for a short time, the clouds took over, it rained again, sleeted again... still had a good time, probably as a result of all the beer sample tents scattered throughout the course.
