So an international academic writers conference (ICFA) that I usually am invited to as a fiction writer, and forgot to accept the invite last October, has been cancelled. I haven't read the email, I was just told by someone else. At a guess, though, there are worries about passing COVID19 around as well as the fact that many attendees come from the recently banned European countries and from countries that President Miller has been asking ICE to stop at the U.S. borders.
When I heard about COVID19, I was somewhat relieved I forgot about accepting the invite (and hence have no travel plans to cancel). I am not at all surprised today that the entire event is getting cancelled. But disappointed for all the graduate level students who were to present their theses at this event. This is going to hit them hard. Especially the ones who are trying to get attention for the next stage of their careers (and references).

Shifting gears a bit... does AWS RDS support the Developers Edition of SQL Server? Also, any idea if they support 2019 yet?

Sad here that the major volleyball tournament was cancelled. I coached last weekend for the younger kids, but the 16-18s were this weekend. I have kids at all ages I've coached and disappointed I don't get to see them and they can't play, but I think this was the right thing to do

Earlier today the school announced that the band trip to Disney was cancelled. There was less than three to go before they got on the bus. Plane tickets, hotels, park tickets, meal vouchers all paid for up front through the school for the whole family. Looks like the virus has crippled me twice now. All told I have lost a little over $5k in cancellations for two trips with little to no chance of getting much more than a couple hundred back.

Sorry to hear that, Sean, and hope things go better for you. I've seen many updated policies lately that are suspending some of the cancellation fees and allowing rebooking. So far I haven't gotten charged for things I've cancelled.

I wonder how this will go. My wife was listening to some of the things they did in China to contain the virus. Seems to be working, but it was totalitarian. Everyone tested, people showing positive signs were quarantined. No choices given, no self quarantine. Government mandated.
That won't work here in the US, and it hasn't worked so far in Italy. Trying not to be too paranoid, but concerned about an older generation and a lot of people with chronic illnesses.

It has happened. people from Wuhan didn't go straight home, they went to the air force base. Cruise ships didn't let people off.
People won't like it, but if it's bad enough, it will happen.

My parents recently moved close to me. Now I have to be extra careful because they have enough additional health conditions that COVID19 probably will be fatal if they get it. Not to mention I'm worried about my toddler.
And Universal shut down too. This on top of all the sports games being held without spectators, all the writers' conferences shutting down, company policy (just sent out the other day) restricting in-person gatherings to necessary meetings of less than 25 meetings (use Skype or video conference if possible)...
All those poor hourly workers at the theme parks and sports venues no longer able to get their paycheck or afford their insurance / groceries / rent & mortgage. This is officially going to tank the economy.
Oh, and at least one grocery store locally has run out of sanitizer and toilet paper.

From what I've read, and my wife keeps researching because she has lots of older clients and is worried, most of us will be fine, but if you have respiratory issues or you are older, it's a concern. The bigger concern is that hospitals get overwhelmed. We expect x, say 10, people a day to have pneumonia and care for them with 12 machines. If 30 people come, it's a problem.
Two weeks ago, a friend had a lung issue (not COVID-19 or flu). They went to the ER, but the three closest hospitals didn't have beds for admittance. Between normal flu being high and other issues, they were full. Imagine now just 10 people having more severe reactions to COVID-19. We can get quickly overwhelmed, especially as we tend to work in a JIT supply chain for many things, including hospital supplies.
I'm concerned, not for me, but for us in general. Older people, those with chronic diseases and obesity should be extra careful. The economy will take a hit, but all of us will and we'll recover. Most of us won't get sick, but we might lose someone we care about or know.
We're worried as my son teaches 5th grade and a fellow teacher went out this week with fever and bad cough, no sinus issues. That's a clue on this strain as some other strains have more running/clogged nose and other symptoms. She can't get tested, and we're worried we are exposed. Told my coaching boss we're going to stay away. A couple grandmothers of my team come into the gym and refuse not to. I'd be devastated if I thought I exposed them.

It's not really about us (younger than older folks with no complications) although nobody wants to get sick. it's about us accidentally passing it from PersonA (who doesn't know they have it) to us (personB) who isn't at high risk, to personC who has conditions. And round and round we go.
Everybody just stay home as much as possible. Pretend you're living with Steve and you can't leave because the horse stalls need mucking out, or you're living with Grant and there's nothing fun to do but chop wood and talk on the zombie radio.

LOL, the grocers have been crazy. I'll need to go get some supplies Sat or Sun, but might go really early or late to limit contact.
We're going to lay low. Wanted to go skiing this week or next, but likely thinking to skip and hang here.
