BACKUP SPID in KILLED/ROLLBACK state ???

  • I have a user who killed a BACKUP and now the SPID is in a KILLED/ROLLBACK state. When I issue the KILL command against the SPID it tells me its 72% done but its not budging further, the CPU is ticking over for the SPID but not the I/O.

I was not aware that the BACKUP command had to be rolled back when killed. What gives?

    thanks

  • Turns out this was due to compression being set on the folder where the dump was being written to. Experience tells me never to have this setting, especially for large dumps. Had to cycle SQL to release file handle and turned off compression on folder. 😉

    thanks
