Basic SQL ''05 setup/config question: How do I change the data file location?

  • I want to keep my log files on C and the data files on the D drive for example...how do I do this? Is this different in '05?

    Thanks!

  • If you mean the default data and log file settings, that hasn't really changed.  You just need to right-click on the server instance in object explorer, go to properties, go to the Database Settings tab, and change the settings.

The move of existing data files is pretty well documented.  In Books Online 2005, go to the following link:

    ms-help://MS.SQLCC.v9/MS.SQLSVR.v9.en/udb9/html/89f01b10-5fae-4ed8-b0fb-a4b9f540fd28.htm

Pay attention to the resource database piece, as there is no parallel in SQL Server 2000.
