Can a 2012 SQL instance be used as the witness for a 2014,2016 database mirroring setup?

    Hi All,

    Can we have a sql witness server with 2012 version to support 2014 and 2016 Database mirroring setup?
    so i need confirmation from experts that can we use the same witness server with 2012 version to setup DB mirroring with  automatic failover configuration being Principle and Mirror servers (both either are in 2014 or 2016 version?) 

    1st scenraio-Like Witness in SQL 2012, Principle and Mirror in SQL 2014
    2nd Scenario - Witness in SQL 2012, Principle and mirror in SQL 2016.

    Needs to be same version. It's listed in the prerequisites for DB Mirroring:
    Prerequisites, Restrictions, and Recommendations for Database Mirroring
