Changing Service Accounts

  • Hi

    Hopefully a simple question with a yes/no answer 😉

If I decide to change the user that the SQLserver and SQLAgent services are running under, can I just change the account to the new account from the services window in Windows...or do I have to re-install SQL server and sepcify the new accounts when I re-install

    Cheers

  • Yes, you can just change the service owner for both in the service window.

  • Caution: use Enterprise Manager. Reason being Enterprise Manager will ensure the proper file and registry permissions are set for the new service account. Merely making the change in Services won't. If the service account has full administrative rights on the server this isn't a concern, but if you've locked down the service accounts it can be. Safest approach, therefore, is just to use EM.
