I need to upgrade SQL 2008 client to SQL 2016.
How to do it?? do I need to uninstall SQL 2008?

by client do you mean just the native client libraries, or actual client tools like Management Studio, SQLCMD, etc.? In general, you can have multiple versions of the client libraries and of the client tools on the same machine. I have 3 different versions of each on my computer and there are no problems.

For SQL Server 2016 and newer, Management Studio is a separately installed program, you can find out more here:

I downloaded SSMS 2016 from Microsoft website. I executed SSMS 2016 exe file but it does not install neither it gives any messages or generates any error.

Right click on the executable and then click in the pop up Run as Administrator.

We run McAfee AV and must disable it to install SSMS 2016 (along with run as admin for the install).
