configuration issues

  • Hi All,

    Recently we had upgraded one of my SQL Server 2005 standard edition running on MS Win 2005 Standarad Edition pack 2.

    using as a application server.

    version :-Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

    previously it was 2 GB RAM and upgraded to 5 Gb but it is showing as 3.50 GB.

    1.My Query is why it is not showing 5 GB?

    2.SQL Server will take automatically the memory configuration once we upgrade the server or not?

    3.If not,can we change MAX value to atleast 3 GB so that 2 GB for kernel ?

    can any one please provide the solutions for the above one

    My first question would be where do you see 3.5 gb RAM ? in SSMS or in the Windows properties or Task Manager. Win 2003 Std Edition is limited to 4 Gb of RAM. The missing 0.5 Gb is usually reserved for the graphiccard.

    SQL Server 2005 can use as much RAM as is supported by the OS. So if your OS only supports 4Gb you can't use all your 5 Gb for SQL.

  • Thanks Markus,

    i have seen in system properties..

  • As MarkusB noted, to take advantage of the RAM above 4GB you will need to upgrade your Windows installation to Enterprise. This is a re-install job.
