    As a side question. Why do you want that column to only hold certain characters?

  • That's actually a good question that I actually asked the users who told us that they all their maintenance items do not contain ALL numeric values.

    They further stated that some vendor FTPs these names to them and that sometimes, the names are numeric which are invalid because they can't associate them with any hardware.

    Even though they have instructed their data entry folks to NOT enter those numbers, they want to have extra protection by adding Contraints check on the columname.

  • I so love following this type of post because it's real world practical stuff that it's good to know as who knows what the business/developers are going to throw at you next!
