What is the datatype of the column ?
If datetime, then the display format is what needs to be changed, so read BOL about "SET DATEFORMAT"

For display purposes you can use CONVERT(varchar(15), date, 101 or 1). 101 is 4 digit year, 1 is 2 digit. For datetime, smalldatetime datatypes the format is set by the DATEFORMAT Setting as Carl has mentioned.

not according to BOL guys:
This setting is used only in the interpretation of character strings as they are converted to date values. It does not affect the display of date values.
