Database Mirroring and Data Replication

    Hello,

    Can anybody out there can explain to me what's the difference between DB mirror and DB replication?

    Also, is it possible to db mirror a SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 vice versa?

    Database Monitoring is a Disaster Recovery solution where by your database can be put up in a secondary server and can be used when the primary server loses connection. DB Mirroring uses the concept of log shipping but does it either synchornously or asynchournously. Where as DB Replication is a hich availability solution where you can put the data in a secondary server and use it for other purposes. Unlike mirroring where the secondary database can be brought up only when primary is unavailable replicated databases can be used in sync with primary.

    For the second question answer is no.

    inaddition to what sugesh said, you can't configure db mirroring from sql 2000 to sql 2005 as it is not available in sql 2000...........the following are the editions supported in sql 2005

    witness server is supported in all the below SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition, Workgroup Edition, or Express Edition but Partners are supported in only standard and enterprise edition with sp1 or above

    You can do a log shipping between 2000 to 2005 but my advice is never do that it's anyway not going to be used for you incase of a major disaster as you can't restore a backup file from 2005 to 2000.
