Deleted 11GB database

    Hi,

    we've deleted 11GB database. we have the back to restore it.

    but even after 12 hours of deleting. The space in the hard disk is not cleared. To restore the database again to the harddisk we need space.

    Is there any way to clear the deleted database from Hard disk and make space for restoring?

    We have gone for defragmentation, and i checked in Recycle bin.

    There is no other file in the Hard disk to occupy space.

    Early help is highly appreciated.

    Hi Viji,

    Goto Explorer and Select Tools --> Folder Options --> View and make a tick on below two items

    1) show hidden files and folders.

    2) Hide Protected Operating System Files

    This will show you the hidden files like pagefile.sys, VSP Images(Backup Snapshots when you use VSP as provider) etc... which will consume more space... After finding where the space is used, then you can take decision accordingly...

    Thanks for your early reply.

    I've checked those places. But there is no symtom of occupying that much space anywhere.

    no other big files are there in the server. All are small..small files occupying spce in KBs.

    If u have deleted the database then u can do a quick format on the same drive,have u done it ?

    Hi Ajay,

    That is a server and we can not do quick format over there. We don't have the permission to do so.

    Determine your pc drive which have enough space.

    start restoring the database

    select the backp file

    and in the options

    , change the path of the database restoration

    are u not able to delete those small files in safe mode or closing sql server services

    It is a server and it doesn't have extra space to load in any other drived.

    and Ajay, it iz a server in australia so we cannot reinstall sql server, because other applications are using it.

    If you can get some outage to reboot the machine, that would be one option to try.

    Otherwise, disable write caching on the drive and defrag it and see if that helps.

    This sounds silly, but have u checked for the MDF file for the deleted database 🙂
