Encrypting External drive

    Good day,
    I have an external drive  for  backups that i took offsite every Friday,i want to encrypt the drive so that in case when it is stolen the data is not exposed.
    I have been reading about Bitlocker encryption which sounds great.My question is, if i turn bitlocker on now  before friday will the backups still run successfully to the external.
    Is there any better idea?
