ETL tools

  • I need to select an ETL tool

We build medical data marts and a few datawarehouses.

We run primarily SQL Serverbut alos use Sybase and Oracle.

We have built our own OLAP tool.

Cognos is our front end reporting tool.

I need to select an ETL tool. Any opinions or good places to start my search.

  • can you enlighted us dummies as to what ETL is?

  • ETL stands for Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL).

A few years back around 4 now. I worked on a proof of concept using a tool called ETI Extract by Evolutionary Technology Internation (http://www.eti.com/home/home.htm).

Anyway this tool, was a point and click source to target mapping tool. After the mappings where defined you would push a button and it would generate the code. You also could customize the tool to build any kind of code you wanted. You might want to check this one out.

  • I know of several sites that use a product called Business Objects. I don't have any 1st-hand experience but it would be worth at least looking at.

  • Business Objects is NOT an ETL tool. Its main purpose is a reporting tool. I do know they acquired an ETL tool manufacturer : ACTA Technologies.

Don't know anything about their tool though.

Anyway, since you're using Cognos, you allready have a reporting tool. But they too have an ETL tool in their suite. I think it is called Transformation Server (but I'm not sure).

  • Maybe I'm looking at a small scale, but any chance DTS could help out ?

  • We developed our own ETL tool.

And have used it at several clients of use.

  • Good ETL tools are very costly. If your requirements are not large then using DTS is a good solution. The main difference is that a good ETL tool can allow you to produce you mechanism quickly with little manpower, whereas a bespoke DTS solution would require more man power.

HOw much data, how complex are the transforms?
