File Allocation Unit Size

  • Setting up a new box for SQL 2005 -

For the disk drives holding the databases, tempdb, and the tran logs, is there an optimum file allocation unit size to set for when the file needs to be expanded? Would it be 64K bytes?

    Thanks -

  • I do not believe the is an optimum. It really matters is how quickly your database is growing. As an example, if you database is growing at 10MB a day, you don't want it to auto increase a 1MB per day. This would cause a performance issue as it has to stop everything it is doing 10 time a day to increase the size of the database.

  • I'm not talking about database settings to increase the database mdb file or tran log file, but rather a setting in the NTFS file system for something very similar but not database-related in particular. Sorry that wasn't very clear in my initial question.

But "File Allocation Unit Size" is an NTFS setting.
