Hardware explanation for dummies

    Hi there,

    assume that I don't know much about hardware and configuration, but just decided to change that.

    Can someone point me to easy to read sources on RAID and/or SAN technology?

    I would check Compaq(HP)s website, They used to have a very good whitepaper on RAID and SQL Server.  Although if it is still there it is getting old, but much of it was conceptual though pretty techie.

    EMC, or IBM is where I'd start for SAN type technology.

    I guess basically the big vendors, EMC, IBM for hardware.  HP, IBM, even Dell as service sellers.

    I'm sure most might even have the "RAID/SAN for Management" (there's a book series with a twist on that concept :-}), as well as more technical for us bits and byters.

    My favourite quick read for RAID is "Microsoft SQL Server 2000 RDBMS Performance Tuning Guide for Data Warehousing" from TechNet.

    Disk and raid info is quite easy, most sql server books have good chapters, e.g. MS SQL Server 2k admin companion, inside SQL Server, sql server unleashed. Neil Pike has some good stuff .. find his faq on http://www.sqlserverfaq.com.

    The old compaq site used to have some excellent whitepapers, although prob a little old now.

    SANs are another matter and I doubt you'll find really conclusive docs on their use, esp with sql server. As they tend to fall in high price vendor kit and "must have" items any disadvantages tend to be played down. I obtained most info by talking with compaq US tech support about SANs and sql server/rdbms in general.
