Some years back, I was a regular contributor in Oracle forums and I can assure you that the "snarky-ness level" is much higher there.

Absolutely. It's my opinion that the Oracle community is a guru vs. newbie class war.

Neither has just about any software product I've bought in the last few years (other than games)

Games still come with manuals?? Since when? 😉

Just about every one I've bought, right up til a month ago (which is the last time I bought games). Not massive tomes of information, but they are manuals and they tell you how to play.

    Yes, they do.

And the results can be interesting: http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/13/pc-ai-sucks-at-civilization-reads-manual-starts-kicking-***/

    mea culpa!

    mea culpa!

    😉

Sorry. My definition of a manual is something more than 10-12 pages. I got hooked on the "classic" manuals that, now that I think about it, were more backstory than instructions. Except for flight sims, *NOW* those were manuals!

    😀

Honestly, I've seen more hostile on this site. Usually by Joe Celko, but sometimes others.

  • I will admit to using lmgtfy a few times. This is typically in response to questions like "What is the largest number an integer can hold?". Something so pathetic as typing the EXACT question into google and clicking I'm feeling lucky and the answer is right there. I have found myself being a bit snarky at times (as most of the people on here have) but it is not to the level that I have seen other people, let alone other forums.

  • As one who would happily describe themselves as well capable of being "snarky", a word I've not heard before, it's not about what might be defined as "dumb" because often what might be defined as "dumb" is just not knowing or understanding, it's the questions that should just not be posted because they are so fundamental. Let's just think what we use SQL Server for in our work and put some of the posts in context. The best analogy I can think of is akin to buying a car and then asking the garage where the steering wheel is.

It's also sometimes seeing the same post every 3 months for the last 12+ years 🙂

BOL is quite capable of giving an insight into much of SQL Server and added to Technet and MSDN, both free online resources, there's plently available. Not aware of BOL or google or Technet - you'd sort of hope that someone in IT who's using SQL Server would be competant to know what the product contains and where resource exists. I don't install BOL on servers but my workstation(s) will always have at least BOL for all current sql versions, don't think I have 2000 BOL installed any more.

I apologise if this post about being snarky is perceived as being snarky itself, but I didn't get GrumpyOldDBA for nothing!

PS. I will always try to be helpful but I reserve the right to try to help the poster become self sufficient by making them look for simple answers themselves - I don't have all the answers and I have to research any number of issues/features/requests , I'll only post a question if I really have struggled to find what I'm looking for.

I don't think that's coincidental. That person's attitude is well-known in the Oracle community.

Exactly. 'Ignorant' is not knowing a particular fact. Everyone is ignorant in some area. I don't think anyone in here has a problem helping people who happen to be ignorant about something.

'Lazy' is not wanting to overcome your ignorance. Personally, I have a problem with helping people who are lazy.

How does someone honestly justify treating other people like that?

Because he knows no one's going to show up at his door with a baseball bat.

  • OP - I've noticed the same thing recently. Honestly, I think some of the more knowledgeable DBAs just stay away for the SQL Server 2008 General forum, because questions are being asked before any research is done. I, for one, always do my research before posting, but I can't always find the answers I need from google. I really think some of it has to do with so many technology jobs being outsourced to under-qualified contractors who are just looking for the easy way out (DISCLAIMER: this is just my opinion and is a generalization - not all contractors are under-qualified).

I know you're asking a rhetorical question Gail, that there is no justification. He's been called out on it before too, but doesn't change. He must be a pretty empty person inside to seek happiness by berating people.
