I just ran into a screwy one a few days ago and wonder if anyone else has come across this.
This is SQL2K SP4 Standard Ed. on a Win2K Server with Dell PE4600 2 x 2.2GHz Hyper and 4GB RAM.
I had a blocking situation. It looks like it was just a long runnning query. So I go into the EM and look and find the spid 154, hostname 1001508-, blocking. So I then sort by hostname, and look what comes up.
SPID | Status | Login | HostName | net_address | DBName |
97 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 94DD8E8E3523 | ISIR |
114 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000D56E95CA8 | ISIR |
122 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000D56E95CA8 | ISIR |
153 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 94DD8E8E3523 | ISIR |
154 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000874AF79E2 | ISIR |
158 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000874AF79E2 | ISIR |
163 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 00065B95F0DA | ISIR |
165 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 00065B95F0DA | ISIR |
167 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000874ABC34D | ISIR |
168 | sleeping | sa | 1001508- | 000874ABC34D | ISIR |
I have no problem with one client have multiple connections to a SQL server. But notice the net_address (MAC addr) column. So I fire up Angy scaner and run it across the IP range and come up with the list below:
IP | Hostname | MAC_Address |
10.65.3.2 | 9jytq11.domain.com | 00-06-5B-CF-89-83 |
10.65.3.6 | gkzkk11.domain.com | 00-06-5B-EA-A2-AC |
10.65.2.161 | 78tc821.domain.com | 00-08-74-AB-C3-4D |
10.65.3.7 | 87TG821 | 00-08-74-AD-17-62 |
10.65.0.207 | jd31g01.domain.com | 00-08-74-AF-79-E2 |
10.65.0.210 | FWGT941 | 00-0D-56-E9-5C-A8 |
10.65.3.15 | fbs5g61.domain.com | 00-11-43-65-E9-64 |
And to add insult to injury 1001508- wasn't even powered up.
I can live with the problem, but is it some sort of bug? Anyone know?

just a wilde shot ...
The hostname is determinde by data from the connection string.
What's the application name that's shown ?
In case of excell or ms-access connections, the hostname-part is filledout at designtime or the sheet or db. When these files are moved/copied afterward, and used, you will not see connections with the hostname of the new pc or server ! , but you'll still see the hostname from designtime !
Maybe this is what's going on ...

That's the answer. That was the machine that originally linked in the the tables to the Access DB.
