How to promote a website?

    Make sure the URL is part of your signature in all e-mails you send out. It worked for me.

    Including your URL in email is a good step. We've relied mainly on word of mouth - it's slower than some methods, but solid. In the last few months we've tried some key word advertising on Google and that has worked reasonably well. Not cheap, but not hugely expensive either, depending on what keyword you're after I guess!

    I'll better get some content on the site before making it really public. And the less it costs, the better for me. Right now this is simply private fun.

    ...and a little bit of anger, because obviously I'm the only active german poster here, or the others use smart usernames and mail adresses

    Hi Frank,

    Links,links,links! get as many as you can all over the web. If it's a technical site like, say,.. SQL server, for example, offer to swap reciprocal links with other similar sites that may send trafic your way. Goto Yahoo/MSN groups and find any similar groups there. You don't even need to ask for these just add a link to your site and someone will click through.

    If it's a professional site think about putting the URL on all your business cards/headed notepaper too.

    Join a web ring if you can find a suitable one http://www.webring.org/

    If your looking at charging for something, think about also giving something away! This will keep people comming back.

    His videos are free, but only available for a limited time - To see the archives cost money.

    There is also some techie stuff you can do when writting the html for your page to make sure search engines index it near the top.

    I guess it's not that difficult, what my site is about

    Anyway, it's aimed at german speaking users.

    Although I like english forums to develop my skills, running a website in english would be a nightmare to me (typos, grammar error ).

    I'm not planning on this. I guess tax will eat everything up, anyway, so I stay away.
