install sql2014 along side sql2008

  • Are there any implications regarding installing a named instance of sql2014 onto a box with sql server 2008 installed as the DEFAULT instance. To be clear, this is not sql2008R2 but SqL2008.

I am aware that some components are shared, but was worried about things being incompatible with such a major difference in versions.

Can anybody offer any thoughts on this ?

  • Function-wise, there should be no difference. You should check on the %PATH% variable to see which utilities will be preferred, as this can have effects on scheduled jobs that use BCP, DTEXEC, SQLCMD, or other utilities.

License-wise, a SQL 2008 license (even licensed by cores) will not cover a SQL 2014 instance, so you would (possibly) have to look into upgrading your license.
