Hello. I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 and SQL Management Studio 2008. I have downloaded the Management Studio I think from microsoft web, but something is wrong. Please HELP ME!!:hehe:
“provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server”on server”.
So, I searched online and I found that when I go in SQL Server Configuration Manager, under SQL Service services there is No items to show.
I have followed this link for help: http://www.technologycrowds.com/2014/02/could-not-open-connection-to-sql-server.html
I have done steps 6-11, but there is problem with 1-5. Nothing works there.
Anyone help please..
If there is a subject like these you can add this post to that topic.
Thank you. 🙂

I'd suggest that you have maybe installed the tools but not the actual database server. Perhaps go back to the beginning and try an install again - it will tell you what components are on there.
Does the following exist:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\

Hello and thank you for the reply.
Yes, it exists. I have downloaded SQL Server 2008 r2. It was like this step by step: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bethmassi/archive/2011/02/18/step-by-step-installing-sql-server-management-studio-2008-express-after-visual-studio-2010.aspx
My problem now is that I don't have this menu :
What should be the next step?
EDIT: this is my current situation

OK so the second screenshot when you are logging into management studio, what are you putting in the server name?
The correct format is:
servername\[sqlexpress]
TRY: localhost\sqlexpress
might work.
SQL Express is installed as a named instance, under other versions (unless specified) it would be a default instance so you would just put the server name in.
