licensing - purchasing Software Assurance

  • I will soon be getting a SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition with per-processor licensing.

I'm wondering about the Software Assurance purchase to go along with it. Is it worth it buy this or just pay for upgrades as needed? Is it like buying an extended warrant on a car or appliance - ie. it is better to pay as you go for things that come up rather than pay up front for something you'll never use?

Also should an upgrade to Yukon, which it comes out, be included under the Software Assurance?

  • I believe that Yukon is included, but SA is for a time period. Yukon is probably a year away, so if youthink you might want it and SA covers it, then it might make sense. If you think you'll stick with SS2K, then I'm not sure I'd buy it.

  • SA covers you for three years, if you do not think you need/want to upgrade within that timeframe, you should not buy SA as it is more expensive (almost double but not quite)
