Max Memory

    I’ve got a 2000 Server (SP4) sitting on top of Win 2000 Advanced Server SP4

    that has 8G of physical memory.  This is a dedicated box, i.e. all it is running as far as apps is Sql Server.  I have the max memory set at about 6.1G. 

    What I have never been able to find is an article, link or heuristic that explains what I should set this at (on a dedicated box).  Should I set this at 6.5G?  7G?  6.3G?

    I don't really know what to put for the max server setting in my situation or even how to come up with the answer.

    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Actually, I used the exact script in this article to set my server up.  But what I'm asking is how do you know what value to actually use not how to get Sql Server to see over 4G, etc.

    It depends on your server load. If the server is a dedicated DB Server I suggest you to let 1 GB RAM left for the OS. In you case you should limit the memory to 7 GB.
