Named Instance First

  • I have a Win 2k/SQL 2000 server here, setup by installing the named instance first. Then added a default instance later, also 2k.

Nothing I can pin down, but it is a little flaky. Sometime you can connect to either, sometimes the named instance is slow, or takes 2 tries.

Is this an incorrect way to install SQL ? Any one else seen problems with this installation sequence ?

I was keeping the default instance available in case we needed to slide SQL 7 in later, we are converting a number of SQL 7 DBs, and didn't know if they'd roll to SQL 2000 easily. I figured they would, but wanted to leave it open just in case. That's why we have installed the default as 2k, since the SQL7 apps have converted easily without changes.

  • Haven't tried this and not sure it should matter, but an interesting issue.

I did the client tools on my laptop, then personal later and it wouldn't let me do a default install. No issues, just annoying.
