Need to move SQL 7.0 server from NT 4.0 Domain to Win2K3 Server Domain

  • Hi all,

I need to move an old SQL 7.0 server from an NT 4.0 Domain to a Windows 2003 Server Domain.  Does anyone know of any problems in doing this?  Anything to watch-out for?

    Thanks.

  • Unfortunately Windows Server 2003 does not support SQL Server 7.0!  You will have to upgrade to SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3.

I had an unfortunate experience with this when one of my customers was talked into buying a Server running Win 2003 when it first came out.  It ended up costing them to upgrade two of their servers, the new one, and their Pubisher/Distributor, as SQL 2000 cannot subscribe to a SQL 7 publication.

On the plus side SQL 2000 can run as SQL 7.  You can even restore SQL 7 backups directly into 2000!  Pratically everything runs as it did in 7, and you'll be able to take advantage of some of the new features straight away, such as cascading updates and deletes.

I don't know your situation, but have you considered holding out for SQL 2005?
