OLAP on same box as SQL Server?

  • Hello - Question about supportability on running OLAP server on same machine as database server. Currently we have no OLAP in use, but a vendor package our IT group is looking at utilizes the Analysis Service for some warehouse reporting. The vendor states that for the amount of use that we will initialy have it is ok to have OLAP & SQL running on the same box. Our current standard environment is to have database server seperate from anything else. Does anyone have experience with the two running together? Are there any performance hit's that we can look for or any supportability issues? Any info at all will be a great help since I have no experience with OLAP/Anaysis Service.

  • Hi Grasshopper,

We are using SQL and Analysis Server on the same box, and haven't faced any problems till date, but a lot would depend on the usage, volume and storage design (Rolap or Molap)

  • We have clients using both on the same machine, some who are reaching the limits and others who are going along nicely.  As an indication of one reaching the limits, their AS service on start-up (ie when loading dims into memory) would consume almost 2Gb of memory, so on an 8gb box where SQL is using 4-5Gb and AS can only access up to 3Gb (32bit version restriction) this will eventually cause problems.  They are considering moving to 64bit to get around the memory constraint.  Other than the memory, I think they are doing fine (quad box with a heap of disk via SAN).

    Steve.
