Password length

  • Hi everyone ,

In need of some urgent advice.

Does any one know of an Micro soft Doc \ KB article that states that SQL passwords do not require a minimum lenght ?

I am right in thinking that there is not a minimum length requirement in SQL ?

    cheers all

  • Well I can't quote the books, but I just ran a test in SQL Server 2000 and I created a login t with both a password of t and an empty password.  Neither produced an error.

    I don't know about 2005.

  • many thanks Brian

  • Prior to SQL Server 2005 (v4.21, v6.0, v6.5, v7.0 & SQL2000) there were no imposed limitations on the length and complexity of 'standard' security regarding SQL Server login passwords. However if you used 'integrated' security then AD would enfoce these constraints for you. Now in SQL Server 2005 MS has finally tightened things up on the 'standard' side as well.
