Permissions (excel 2003)

  • Hi,

Last week everything was fine, but this week when I try to connect to my SSAS 2005 cube in Excel 2003 I get

OLAP Server error Logon failure unknown user or bad password.

I am using Cube analysis in Excel.

So I tried to create a new connection

    1) Manage Connections

    2)

    3) Click server and type in the server name and again I get unsuccesful login. Note: The dialog did not give me a prompt for user and password.

Today due to network restrictions I had to reset my password.

Any ideas? Any help very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Pete

  • Are you running the SQL Server services and the SSAS2005 services with the same or different accounts?

When you process a cube the SSAS2005 must have permissions to read data from the source database. If you run SSAS2005 on a separate machine than the sourec database and the SSAS2005 service account is running as "local system" this server have no permissions on other servers/machines.

You can check this is the SQL Server Configuration manager(for SSAS2005).

Also, try the default impersonation mode for the data source connection.

    Tanx 😀

  • Hi,

All the services are running using a domain account that has high permissions

I tried the impersonation option on the connection within the cube, and this didn't seem to make any difference.

when I login to SSMS on the server I can browse the cube no problem.

It's only when I am in Excel on another machine the login fails!

NOTE: I have recently changed my login password, could that be the reason? When I setup the connection in Excel though it doesn't ask for a user/password.

  • NOTE: Even BEFORE i get to the cube selection when creating a new connection I get an error with permissions. So I don't think it is an issue with the cube.....

It's when I do this in Excel 2003....

    1. Define Connection

    2. Click the server radio button

    3. Click next

then fails with a permissions problem

  • Also if I try and use SQL Server Management studio (Analysis Services) I get a login failure as well.

I have checked the SSAS database on the server itself and my windows login is a member of the server role.

PLEASE HELP this is driving me mad......

    Thanks

    Pete
