potentially stupid question

  • Right.

I have SQL Server (2005) Standard edition installed on 4 servers all with CPU licenses.

I want to use management studio 2008 because it has more fancy features than 2k5.

so far the only versions of management studio I've had/used on my workstation have been the express editions which dont let you see activity monitor etc. the full version of ssms 2005 is installed on the servers themselves.

Had an issue today that a production system ground to a halt because of a page io latch lock and we had to kill a process. I had to RDP to the machine to get management studio started to check activity monitor and the problem is that with only 2 rdp sessions available, if 2 dbas and 2 line 3 server techies want to look for potential causes of the issue simultaneously there is a fight for who gets on to look for the issue first.

My question is, can I instal the full version of the 2005 management studio on my desktop because I have CPU licenses on the servers or would I have to/can I even purchase ssms 2008 separately to install on mine and my fellow dba's workstations?

  • Yes you can.

SS licenses are for the servers / database engines. Billy doesn't care that you have a tool on your laptop to connect remotely.

P.S. Intellissence won't work when you connect to a 2k5 server, even with ssms 2008.
