Not ure if you resolved this already, but it sounds a little like you hven't put a control (like a table or list) onto the report body (ie you just clicked and dragged a few of the field items onto the body). Try adding a table and then dropping field items into the details(body) section of the table. This will automagically put the field name as the column header for each field you drag in.
