RAID cluster size versus OS cluster size?

  • I have a RAID versus OS question.

    New Server specifications:

    DELL PowerEdge 2650, Dual Processor 3GHZ Intel Xeon (Hyper-threading).

    4G Server memory.

    PowerVault Array attached thru a DELL Perc4 RAID Controller.

    OS is configured as a RAID 1+0 on the PowerEdge for a total of 33GB.

    Powervault is configured as a RAID 1+0 for a total of 272GB.

    The PowerVault was configured as a 64K cluster size, which is the size

    that all the available documentation I could find indicated to be the most

    efficient as pertains to extent allocation and fragmentation, etc.

    After the server was turned over to me to install SQL server (SQL200 Standard Edition), Sp3a+hotfixes,

    I noticed that the OS on the RAID was formatted as a 4K cluster size.

    My question is this: Is the 4K OS cluster size inefficient based on the cluster size of hte RAID array?

    At some point, it would seem to me that it's a fragmentation/allocation mismatch that can't be efficient.

    Since the server is not ready for production yet, I still have time to reconfigure anything

    I need. Should I leave it or change it?

  • In my server I have the same deal. the guy who installed configure the hardware RAID with 46 K and the OS with 4 K.

    But we re format the OS so that they were both with 64 k.
