Re: SQL Server 2000 E-mail options for maintenance plans

  • I'd like to setup e-mail notifications for database maintenance plan successes/failures. Our mail server is Groupwise 7.0. Currently, I have db_owner access to all the databases but not necessarily administrator access to all the database servers.

From what I've read online, there are 3 options available to me:

    1. SQL Mail

    2. CDOSYS (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/312839)

    3. xp_smtp_sendmail (http://www.sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm)

Based off the websites that I've seen, SQL Mail could cause the most disruption to the database. However, no one seems to have an opinion versus CDOSYS versus xp_smtp_sendmail.

Does anyone know if any option is better/worse than another?

  • I have no experience with CDOSYS but I have been using xp_smtp_sendmail for years on 2000 servers and have never had an issue with it. As long as the smtp server is up and running the emails get sent and go through without a problem. If you are just looking for something to send you notifications on success or failure, this works beautifully and it absolutely comes at the right price. 😀
