What will happen in restarting sql server instances on 2 active active clustered nodes?

if you restart at the same time nothing as there will be no failover partner available for each instance!
Just out of interest how many nodes are in the cluster?

Hi,
We restart our active/active clusters at different times to allow the instances to failover and then allow failback for the instances so they end up on the correct node after the patching wave.

Be it Active - Active or Active - Passive, Failing over of the sql instance will depend upon the possible owner.
Whichever node is selected in Possible owner section, instance can failover on that node in case of failure.
