Server randomly slows performance.

  • I have a quad processor 3.2 Ghz  with 4 gig of RAM of which SQL is configured for 3 gig or this RAM.  About once a week, we seem to get a period of time where Pages/Sec it averaging over 3000.  The is a OLTP database server with hundreds of current users.

This server runs fine most days and their is no extraordinary load on it on the days it decides to become a slow piece of crap.  Any ideas?

  • No need for a reply, this issue was figured out.  It was because one of our DBAs enabled 4 separate trace flags that Microsoft had asked us to enable to troubleshoot an Access Violation issue that we were getting.  MS did tell us it would have little or no impact on performance.

In case anyone cares, these trace flags were 2551, 8809, 815, 818

  • Just curious ... what did MS say that each of the trace flags did ???

  • More than likely those were trace flags that dumped out more information in the SQLDumpxxx files that get created when the AVs occur and more than likely, only MSFT PSS can use that information.

But if that was not the case, I am sure that all of would benefit from this information if you don't mind sharing it. Also, which version and which service pack were you running on ?
