We have a single 4 processor SQL Server 2000 Standard machine that is being used to it's capacity. We would like to upgrade to an 8 way processor box seamelesly. I've upgraded this machine before, but it is never seamless.
We first get a good back up. Then we copy the database dumps to the target machine after setting up SQL Server and replicating logins. Then each database is restored sequentially. There are 10 databases and the largest 3 are between 10 and 20 gig. The copy time alone is too much down time.
We would like to bring the new machine on line and replicate the data to it. When replication is done we would like to make make it so that all requests are seamelessly routed to the new server and take the old one down.
