SQL 2000: Estimating Transaction log size

  • Hi,

I am currently designing an enterprise databse where the business requires the transaction log size to be limited and auto grow set to off, to do this I would need to set a base line size for the transaction log which will be its max size. Has anyone done this before???

  • Well, it all depends on the kind of database. There should be not hard and fast rule as to set the .ldf file, b'coz it all depends on your database updations and the kind of recovery mode you are going to set. Is it going to be a business application where you have 24*7 users connected.

You can however keep it flexible at the initial stage and then take transaction log backups which will keep it to a limited size.

  • Hi,

It is a business based database, but will only be utilised between 6am - 6pm, with really high usage levels. Current recovery mode is set to simple. We do clear down the DB log as part of EOD batch, but trying to estimate a max value is not so simple. There seems to be too many variables to the equation.
