SQL 2008 Compressed Backups

    Regarding restricting the CPU usage - Microsoft recommends using Resource Governor to limit the CPU used:

    yes, I followed that, but it seemed to be the sql server service account that did all the work so the resource govenor didn't have much affect

    It will still be the Service Account User that uses the CPU in task manager, but as long as you executed the backup command as the user you set up the restrictions for, it will be restricted.

    Please note that Resource Governor only honours the restriction if there's another process that needs CPU, so it will still use 99% if nothing else is going on.
