SQL Server DBA in Richmond, VA -- Contract to Hire

    My client is looking to hire a skilled SQL Server DBA and give them the opportunity to learn PEOPLESOFT and be the DBA for that as well!!!!!

    Excellent opportunity to learn PS and show your SQL Server talent.

    Client: Large Enterprise Environment

    Location: Richmond's South Side (Midlothian area)

    Pay: 55K-$65K

    Duration: 5 month Contract to Hire

    Please see below for the description. This person must be flexible to learn PeopleSoft and able to eventually be the DBA for this ERP system. The client has PS on SQL Server 2000, so they will continue to work with and support SQL Server, as well.

    The Database Administrator administers, maintains, develops and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the company databases.

    The person who fills this role should be experienced in DBA and SQL, as well as familiarity with PeopleSoft. They are also looking for someone who can troubleshoot.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs data base management system (DBMS) design and redesign activities as needed.

    • Coordinates with other data processing staff members to evaluate need; select software; design/develop storage structures, mapping and search strategies, access methods and support software for creating, maintaining and reor¬ganizing database.

    • Proposes technical standards, design rules, and conven¬tions for databases.

    • Specifies, designs, and develops data extract and load software. Performs loading, testing, and validation functions. Implements data definitions and implements and maintains data dictionary and other data support soft¬ware.

    • Reviews, tests, and evaluates performance of activity against physical data structures. Initiates system improvements; assesses impact of change; recommends redevelopment, redesign or restructuring. Implements restart, recovery and backup procedures.

    • Installs and maintains tools necessary to guard against unauthorized access to and use of database. Installs and maintains tools needed to ensure accuracy of data.

    • Administers data dictionary by entering accurate data from other systems, other system documentation and creates appropriate synopses, updates and cross-referenc¬es. Generates copybooks for data processing staff. Monitors growth of production files and plans for expansion and problem resolution. Assigns and monitors access controls on all data base files.

    • Adheres to corporate information security guidelines and promotes information security and the protection of automated corporate assets among co-workers by encouraging them to practice safe computing and follow information security guidelines.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILIT¬IES

    • Requires superior technical, analytical and design abilities.

    • Ability to make technical decisions critical to successful development and operation of application systems.

    • Requires current knowledge in hardware and software to determine optimum configura¬tions.

    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, in person and on the telephone.

    • Ability to operate personal computer and peripheral equipment.

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSING

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field, with three years experience with database and data communications systems, including experience as a systems programmer or programmer analyst.

    MUST BE ABLE TO WORK IN THE U.S. WITHOUT ANY SPONSORSHIPS AND MUST BE WITHIN DRIVING DISTANCE FOR INTERVIEWS.

  • According to salary.com, the range of salaries in Richmond is $70,430 to $94,080 for a database administrator.

  • Thanks for your reply.  I wish the client would pay that much...would make the recruiting easier!  But, they are the client and i have placd plenty of good SQL Server dba's in Richmond at much lower salaries than listed on salary.com. 

    They are not looking for a level III person, more like someone with 2+ years of experience.  There is a 12% bonus, as well.

    Sounds like an OK deal if you only have 2 years under your belt. Take the 5 months as paid PS training and then go somewhere else for better $$. Forget the CTH option...not at that salary anyway. You would really be cheating yourself if you settled for that salary over a longer term.
