can anyone recommend any good 'free' documentation tolls for sql server ? Ideally something that will give me good relationship diagrams. There seem to be a few you have to pay for but my company wont stump up 🙁

Sorry. I don't know of a good and free tool. If you want a good tool, Redgate SQL Doc is the way to go.

I'll second that. I worked at a place where they weren't willing to pay for such tools and it took a while to convince them. They never regretted the decision. If they aren't willing to pay for that then I suspect you're lacking quite a few good quality tools. Download the Redgate Toolbelt Essentials and have a play. Then show them how it can make your life (and therefore their's too) easier.
For a company of pretty much any size, it shouldn't be considered prohibitively expensive.
