SQL Server installation in Unix\Linux

  • Hello Masters,

Is it possible to install sql server on Unix\Linux platform ? Is MS SQL server supporting those platforms ?

    Thanks in advance.

  • No. If you're going to use linux, you should probably look into MySql. You can connected from linux to a MSSQL server though.

  • Thanx Abel for quick reply. So we can not install MSSQL on linux\unix platform but we can access MSSQL from linux\unix platform. Am I correct ?

  • MSSQL is a Microsoft product, and can only be installed on a Microsoft operating system.

You can install MySQL on Linux and use the MySQL Data Controller to connect to a MSSQL server.

  • PostgreSQL is the way to go IMO if your going open source

  • I second Postgre over MySQL.

  • Of course, if you were willing to pay for MSSQL, you could also look at Oracle or DB2 which both work on Linux 🙂

  • Oracle... /me shudders.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal then. I haven't seen them do anything with less than 5 consultants and they won't even help spell it.
