Ah - SSIS makes all of the difference. I didn't catch the fact that it was in SSIS at all.
By the way - have you checked this out yet? This is an article pretty much going over a good way to implement this , using SSIS. Andy is actually contributing on a book dealing with the nuts and bolts of SSIS, so this is a decent primer on it.

SSIS gives you a lot of options that involve objects/processes you don't see in T-SQL. If you want a t-sql based solution - Steve's solution would be the start to your process.
